Fire safety FAQ

Fire & life safety questions

How often does a fire alarm system need to be inspected in Ontario?

The Ontario Fire Code requires fire alarm systems to be tested and inspected annually to CAN/ULC-S536, with more frequent checks of certain components (such as daily and monthly checks of trouble signals, batteries and manual stations). We perform the annual inspection, provide a written report and correct deficiencies.

How often must emergency lights and exit signs be tested?

Emergency lighting units must be checked monthly and given an annual test that runs them on battery for their required duration. Exit signs must be kept lit and visible at all times. We can do both and keep your logbook up to date.

How often do fire extinguishers need service?

Portable extinguishers must be inspected monthly (usually by the owner) and serviced annually by a qualified technician, with 6-year maintenance and hydrostatic testing at the intervals set out in NFPA 10 for each extinguisher type. We tag every unit and note when the next service is due.

How often does a restaurant hood suppression system need service?

Commercial kitchen fire suppression systems are serviced every six months. Service includes checking nozzles, the detection line and fusible links, manual pull stations, the gas shut-off and the electrical shut-off interlocks. We provide a service tag and report after each visit.

Do I need hardwired smoke alarms?

New homes, additions and many renovations in Ontario require hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms with battery backup. Every Ontario home must have working smoke alarms on every storey and outside sleeping areas, and CO alarms next to sleeping areas if the home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage.

Can you fix the deficiencies on my fire inspection order?

Yes. Send us the inspection order or report and we will quote each fire alarm, emergency lighting, exit sign, extinguisher and electrical item, complete the corrections, and give you documentation to provide to Fire Prevention.
